For children new to Canada, it can be a stressful transition to not only learn to speak English, but also keep up with school work!  That’s why Pear Tree is offering many special courses, designed to meet the needs of your child. All of our courses are offered as ESL in Context (with a focus on Canadian course work, to get them up to speed in their regular school), and ESL in Context Plus (with an additional focus on grammar)!

ENGLISH CLASSES – ESL IN CONTEXT

Pear Tree makes learning English easier by teaching the language within one of our theme-based courses (see below). All of our courses will enhance your child’s understanding of what they are learning at school, while at the same time focusing on learning English. All of our teachers for these courses are fully-qualified and highly-experienced ESL teachers who know how to teach our Pear Tree courses at an ESL language level; that way, your child doesn’t have to feel like their falling behind at school.

ESL IN CONTEXT PLUS!

For parents that want to give their child the best start in Canada, you’ll want to go for our ESL in Context Plus! course. This is the ultimate language learning combination: English in Context, plus top-quality language instruction (grammar, pronunciation). Half of the class is dedicated to our theme-based courses, while the other half is dedicated to focusing on language learning. Regardless of which part of the class, your child will always be learning in manner that develops their life skills in Canada, as well as equipping them with the social and academic skills needed for success in Canadian education!

English in Context options:

ESL and Social Studies

We focus on grammar and language skills, but also on social studies content as outlined by the BC curriculum. The skills your child develops at Pear Tree include researching, presenting, reading, writing and vocabulary development, all on themes around social studies.

ESL and Language Arts

This is a general course to language arts. We focus on grammar and language skills, but also on language arts content as outlined by the BC curriculum. The skills your child develops at Pear Tree include reading, writing, comprehension, critical thinking, speaking and listening, and novel studies, all on skills pertaining to language arts.

ESL and Canadian History

Canadian history can be difficult to understand without the appropriate background knowledge or vocabulary. This course will help boost your child’s understanding of Canadian history, while having them develop their language abilities. The skills your child will develop include listening, reading, writing, comprehension and public speaking. All the topics relate to the BC curriculum, so your child will be more successful in school.

ESL and Science

Science can be especially difficult for non-native students. We focus on grammar and language skills, but also on science content as outlined by the BC curriculum, to help your child be more successful in school. The skills your child develops at Pear Tree includes reading science text books, writing, comprehension, critical thinking, and research projects, all based on themes as found in the science curriculum.

ESL and Literacy/Reading

We will focus on grammar and language skills, but in relation to reading. Younger learners will focus on picture books and sharing their ideas orally. Older students will practice reading novels and doing novel studies, literature circles, and comprehension activities. All our themes and goals parallel those in the BC curriculum, to ensure your child is more successful in school.

ESL and Writing/Essay Composition

Written grammar and sharing thoughts in writing can be difficult for many non-native English speakers. This course will help boost your child’s confidence in their written English skills by developing their understanding of the writing process. Our expert teachers will help them develop ideas in writing, to write creatively, to edit their work, and to how to check for grammar and spelling. All our themes and goals parallel those in the BC curriculum, to ensure your child is more successful in school.
